splashing laughing baby-o

Asher and I just got back from a little 4-day road trip to visit extended family in another province and, as of tomorrow, our family will be spending a week at a beach cottage about a half an hour outside of our city. We can't wait! I hope for lots more giggles from Asher this week, like these ones I got yesterday as we played in our back yard.

We're hoping for good weather while we're away, but either way, I'm sure I'll have lots of exciting stuff to share when we get back. Bye for now!

lately

This is me.

And lately I have been...

... thinking a lot about time lines.

... looking forward to seeing my family this weekend.

... anticipating our week at the beach cottage and having bonfires.

... enjoying my runs.

... not eating enough ice cream.

... mulling over relationships, and which ones I need to focus on investing in.

... putting off writing a letter I need to write.

... not having enough time to do the things I need to do, and especially one important thing I need to do.

... having a love/hate relationship with my vacuum cleaner.

... reading too many books at once.

... saying "no" a lot more than I want to.

... cuddling with a boy. Two of them, actually.

... wanting to see a really good movie.

... realizing my expectations are sometimes unrealistic.

... wondering what I will do when I grow up.

... longing to take a big trip.

... reminding myself to enjoy the simple things.

... learning about maturing as a Christian, without doing too much of the actual maturing bit.

... missing making jewelry; needing a creative outlet.

... avoiding my spare bedroom.

... feeling proud of a little someone in my life.

... wanting to paint my toenails.

... focusing on my posture.

... trying to figure it all out.

Just another day home with Mama

Hi there, this is Asher! I wanted to write to tell you that I really love my days home with Mama, when we have nothing special planned, and end up having lots of fun! That's what we did one day this week.

I like to pull all my books off the shelf and watch my Mama pick them up. She falls for it every time!

I love walking around with my push toy. I sometimes get stuck in corners though and need my Mama's help to get out.

And I also got to play outside with my cousins who live next door. We played in our little pool.

I checked out the grass. I'm not too sure about this stuff. It feels funny on my hands and legs.

And I love to splash, so of course I did loads of that!

I also thought I'd try tasting this water, but I ended up getting some up my nose. I didn't like that.

I'm really liking the summer!

That was my fun day at home with Mama.

Crawling update # 4 million

I know, another crawling update! Can you tell this is a major focus of my life right now, since it's the only thing I have blogged about over the past 3 weeks. Sigh. My life really is more exciting than it appears, I swear.

In any case, I'm very proud of my little guy who has, in the past week or so, started the traditional criss cross crawl. It is still not his primary method of moving around, but who cares! He can do it! Check it out...

Isn't that the most wonderful and glorious thing that you've ever seen in your whole life??? It is to me! God is so good and I'm so thankful that He has blessed our family and provided growth for Asher in this way.

I have a feeling walking is just around the corner. Stay tuned!

From bum scoot to frog crawl

So it's been close to 4 weeks now since we've been seeing the Pediatric Physiotherapist and Pediatric Chiropractor for Asher's gross motor/pelvis concerns, and I thought I'd share an update with you.

We see the Chiropractor once a week at this point (we had been seeing her twice a week for the first couple weeks). Asher continues to need adjustments, but he is maintaining his adjustments well and the alignment and range of motion issues are definitely improving. We've seen the Physiotherapist twice and are basically on a home program. We won't see her again until the beginning of August because he needs time to learn and develop the muscles that he hadn't been using.

In that 4 week time span Asher has made HUGE improvements. He is moving and sitting in a variety of different positions that he hadn't been using before, and he is definitely using his legs and pelvis in new ways.

- He is able to pull to standing on furniture and shelves on his own (he needed help prior) and is doing this ALL THE TIME. Our current issue is teaching him how to get back down from standing. He's beginning to get it, which is a relief because he would frequently cry in his crib because he's stuck standing up and couldn't get back down to go to sleep. That SUCKED.

- He is able to side-step as he walks holding onto furniture.

- He is able to bend down to the front and side from sitting and is beginning to squat down while holding on from standing.

- He is able to get into 4 points (the crawling position) on his own and is even beginning to try to move in different ways in that position. It's interesting to watch him try to figure it out; he knows I want him to move in the 4 points position, but he doesn't know how to do it yet. So what he does is combines the arm motion from his bum crawl with the leg position of 4 points and he looks like a frog. He is beginning to do the cross crawling motions, but doesn't quite have it yet.

- He now climbs stairs.

(Check out this video of him climbing the 2 little stairs on our main floor; you can also see his frog crawl as well)

I'm very proud of his growth and learning in just 4 weeks. He's such a smart little guy and really has learned to do a lot of different muscle movements in such a short time. Once we finishing working out the kinks in his pelvis and hips, and help the muscles to get stronger in that area, I have the utmost confidence that this little guy will be just fine.

No Sleep, No Cheese

" At twelve months of age, 82 percent of children have two naps and 17 percent take only a single afternoon nap. But by fifteen months of age, 43 percent of children are taking two naps and 56 percent take a single afternoon nap. This is a dramatic change occurring over a short time period. This transition, however, may not be smooth..."

May not be smooth?!?!?! That's all you got?!?! May not be smooth is a bit of an understatement for me. 5 AM wake-ups for almost 2-weeks friggin' sucks the big one. SUCKS. THE. BIG. ONE. Do you hear me out there? Do you hear me Dr. Marc Weissbluth? You gotta give me more than that.

"...You might have a few rough months when one nap is not enough but two are impossible..."

A few rough months?!?! Ohhhhhhh! I want two naps back! Two naps was working for us. We had a nice little routine, it was predictable, it was the same, it worked, Asher slept, I slept, it was glorious. Sleeeeeeep. Yummmmmmm. How do I get it?

" ...Here are some ideas for making this transition easier. Move the bedtime earlier."

Oh you're pulling that one, huh? That's the only idea in this freakin' whole book! Move the bedtime earlier. If he gets up earlier than 5 AM I will not be impressed with your little idea there "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" book. I'm sure that intimidates you. I know it. Watch out.

"Getting up too early may be caused by going to sleep too late. Earlier bedtimes often prolong night sleep and prevent early wake-ups... Earlier bedtimes usually help the child get through the transition to a single afternoon nap."

Sleep deprivation = no rational ideas of my own (apparently medicating my son or tying him to his crib aren't really wise parenting choices) so I guess that's what I have to try then, huh? An earlier bedtime. I have a feeling this could be rough.

Oh friends, wish me luck.

And thankfully my recent urinary tract infection medication doesn't prohibit me from drinking coffee like it does dairy, because, right now, I need it. (Yes, my UTI antibiotic prohibits me from consuming dairy 2 hours before and after taking the medication. Weird, huh?)

a new meaning to "passed out"

I told you a couple weeks ago that Asher is just in the process of transitioning from taking two naps a day down to only one, and normally that one is from 11 to 1, give or take. Today he woke up a bit later than usual in the morning (8:10... it was glorious), so I tried to hold him off for his nap until after lunch. Here is what happened...

Asher has never done this before. It was pretty cute!
