... wakes up to eat somewhere between 3 - 5 AM, but goes right back to sleep

... is up for the day between 7:30 - 8 AM

... has 3 naps a day; one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and a little one around suppertime

... is just starting to roll over from his belly to his back

... is not so into tummy time

... coos a lot

... loves to suck on his hands (I think I have another thumb-sucker in the making)

... needs his soother to calm down most of the time

... loves the star lamp in his bedroom

... is always happy on his change table

... has the biggest smile that comes so easily to him

... likes his bouncy chair

... is super content in the baby carrier

... still falls asleep on my chest and in my arms

... is still nursing strong (despite my reoccurring blocked milk duct!)

... has spent the night at his Nana's house twice

... just got his very first teddy bear (a Winnie the Poo from Pops)

... is mostly in size 3-6 month clothes

... is an amazing car-traveller

... hates getting into his car seat

... is pretty comfortable around a certain loud toddler who sometimes hits him and sometimes smothers him with hugs and kisses

... has managed to fill a space in my home and heart that I truly didn't know existed

... is loved immensely!

weekly changes

This past week has been one of many changes in what our daily life looks like. Asher's gymnastics class ended 2 weeks ago, Kindermusik class ended this week, and I also finished up my 2 "working" days a week with taking care of little Marek. Now that his mom is home on maternity leave, she won't need regular care for him.

This process of changing from such a structured and schedule routine - something Asher and I both thrive in - to something more fluid has been sort of an adjustment. I felt a little anxious about that, and sad too, as I really loved our little weekly routine and especially because Asher loved having Marek here 2 days a week. The whole 10-months that I've cared for him have been so good for our family and so good for Asher. I've come to see Asher learn so much from their time together, and the special little friendship they have is priceless.

But this week I've also been reminded that, as with any door that closes, new opportunities are abundant as well. We have more time for many other things...

... trips to the zoo (sorry no pictures yet of that one!)

... play dates with friends (Marek is definitely not out of our life, thankfully!)

... time to play in the sand (or sandbox) and shovel

... time at the park and on the slide

... time to play together and just "be"

And you know, it's probably a good thing that we change our routine for the summer, because in a couple months from now, it's going to change in a big way all over again!

PS - all these changes inspired me to change up my blog layout too! I hope you like it!

You know you're...

... indulging in pregnancy cravings when you make nanaimo bars at 8PM and also when you make your friends go out with you for nachos at random times

... gaining too much weight when pants that fit you 3 weeks ago are a bit too snug now

... pregnant when you can't sit in a car for 2 hours without having a sore back for the rest of the day

... having a bad hair day when your 2-year old cries when he sees you (true story!)

... getting old when you consistently crash at 9PM

... too tired to make supper when you give your kid toast and cucumbers

That was my weekend - how about yours?

Maple Sugar Woods

This weekend we went to the Maple Sugar Woods just minutes from our house.

There were a lot of people there.

Asher loved walking in the puddles in his rubber boots.

He loved it so much, in fact, that that's all he wanted to do.

He went through some pretty big puddles.

And some pretty deep ones.

And he pretty much had to walk through every one he saw.

It took a long time, but it was fun. We watched the maple sap dripping from the trees.

And ate maple taffy (OK so that was mostly me...)

We had an awesome time as a family.

And of course Asher had a blast with one of his best buds Noah.

They sure do like each other!

After 2 hours in the woods, walking and splashing, we were pretty happy...

... and pretty wet!

This week...

... I have been caring for a lot of toddler boys

... and it's been tiring

... but fun and good

... and I've had help

... which was helpful

... but I'm sure glad it's Friday!

Confessions...

Well Internet friends, I have a few confessions to make. I haven't been completely honest with you all about a few things, and I think I'd just feel a bit better if I took the time right now to get them off my chest. Yes, that's what I will do.

Remember how I used to update you all regularly about my running life? And remember how I bought all this amazing gear and even started training to run my first half marathon? And actually maybe you knew, or maybe you didn't, but this past weekend I was actually supposed to run that half marathon? Well I didn't do it, and I had to drop out of the training altogether, and I actually haven't been running at all.

I know, it's terrible. All that hard work totally put to waste.

And remember how we planned this big cruise? And I told you all that it was because 2010 was a big year for us? Well it's true, it is a big year. Greg and I will both turn 30 and celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. But there's another reason 2010 will be a big year, and another reason why it was important that we go on this cruise, well now or... not for a very long time.

Do you have any guesses? Huh, huh, huh? Do you?

Well here's a hint:

Do you get it? Do you see what Asher's shirt says? It has nothing to do with Asher being a fan of Big Brother, the reality show, like a few of you thought.

Asher's going to be a BIG BROTHER this year! We will welcome our second baby into the world! Whoo hoo!

Do you feel like this?

My mom was very surprised because she thought we were going to wait another year. But maybe you're not so surprised; I know some of you have been asking me about this for a few months now.

Well let me tell you about how this baby boo came to be (well I'll spare you some of the details!) and our journey since that time.

Greg and I had been trying for a few months to give Asher a sibling. 4 or 5 days after Christmas, I did a home pregnancy test and saw this:

2 pink lines; how glorious! We were thrilled over the moon and couldn't believe we would get the opportunity to love someone the way we love Asher all over again!

We decided to keep it on the down-low for a little while though - I think we are a little more cautious since our miscarriage 3 years ago. We told literally almost no one our news. I guess we had reason to be cautious...

At 6.5 weeks of pregnancy, I started bleeding. It was not heavy bleeding, but it was bleeding nonetheless, and that was exactly how my first miscarriage started. We were shocked and dumbfounded. I will remember that time of my life as so confusing. I didn't know what the outcome would be, and it was so hard to know whether or not to let my hope live. I wanted to believe that things would work out, that the bleeding would stop, but a deep part of me was broken just even thinking about having to grieve the loss of another baby all over again. It was such an emotional roller coaster.

My doctor was so good to us. He immediately put me on bed rest. We had appointments, and exams, and blood work, and more blood work, and phone calls, and finally an ultrasound. Even though the bleeding stopped after 2 days, he wanted to assure me that everything was OK, especially due to my history. So at 8.5 weeks of pregnancy, we got to see this:

Yes that little black circle with a kidney bean inside is our baby! And rest assured that baby is alive and well and his/her little heart beat was going strong. The baby already had little arms and legs and a head and a body and all the necessary parts to grow a healthy person. We even got to see the baby give a little bum wiggle! The ultrasound technician said that at 8 weeks the baby can start having involuntary wiggles, and we got to see one during the ultrasound! I felt like that was such a blessing, to assure us that this little person was alive and well.

We were happy to get the "official" ultrasound report which stated that the baby was the size he/she was supposed to be according to my last period, the placenta and umbilical cord looked good, and there were no visible abnormalities or problems with my uterus or the baby. We finally felt like we could breath a sigh of relief and started to share our news with friends and family. I still feel unsettled about running though, even though I got the official OK to resume my normal life. Maybe it's just me being overly cautious, but I think it's worth it considering what's at stake.

And now here I am, 12 weeks pregnant and working on growing a belly like it's nobody's business! I think now that we're just about clear of this first trimester, I feel like this is actually going to happen. Crazy! Another person in our family. Wow. This person is set to arrive on September 2, which means I get to be huge and pregnant all summer. In my books, that's a free ticket to eat all the ice cream I want! :)

And through all this, I feel as though God taught me so much about hope and trust, and I'll tell you what - HOPE LIVES! :)

What we're doing today...

... enjoying being snowed in

... wearing comfy clothes

... drinking coffee (that'd be me!)

... pretending to be a cat (that'd be Asher!)

... talking on the phone

... taking care of my sick husband (he's been home from work for 3 days now!)

... feeling sore from sleeping in the guest room bed in order to avoid catching aforementioned sickness from said husband (it's a crappy bed, sorry if you've ever slept in it!)

... feeling tired from consistently getting woken up between 5:30-6:30 all week by one little guy

... can't believe it's possible that Asher is 21-months old today. I guess I should just start saying he'll be 2 in April since he's closer to 2 than he is to 1

... dreaming about that potential cruise - we have an appointment to talk possibilities with a travel agent tomorrow!

... wondering if we'll make it to Asher's swimming lesson this afternoon with that storm out there

... wanting to bake (so weird) but I don't have any eggs

... looking forward to going to my favorite restaurant with some friends next weekend

... eating a lot of cheese

What are you up to?

Apparently if it wasn't for Wordless Wednesday's, there wouldn't be much on my blog as of late. Sorry about that, faithful blog readers. This is what's been up lately...

- I've been feeling a little under the weather, and that has kept me on the down low.

- We've been reading a lot of Good Night, Gorilla (obviously).

- Asher is eating more fruits and vegetables again, after his little picky eating phase.

- We've been practicing animal sounds. I plan on making a video to show you all the ones Asher knows; it's quite a lot!

- Greg took Asher to his Kindermusik class for the first time, and everyone survived.

- We've been singing a lot of "The Wheels on the Bus". Asher's favorite line to say is "roun and roun".

- The fascination with cars, trucks, buses, and trains continues.

- I've been feeling the love of lots of dear friends. I'm so blessed.

- I've been thinking a lot about the idea of hope and am trying more than ever to look to Jesus for mine.

- 2010 = Greg and I both turn 30 and will celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. I'm dreaming of a cruise and hope we can make it happen.

- We are now officially done paying off our car. Wow, what an awesome feeling! We're hoping to just ride out this "no car payments" thing for a while.

- I've been liking graphics of birds lately, and someone dear even made me a special little hand-sewn bird of my own!

What have you all been up to? I'd love to hear about it!

New Years Eve and Jayson's Birthday

For New Years Eve this year we had an AWESOME night with a few "couple" friends of ours. We ate and drank way too much, and played Singstar and Rockband (ok, mostly Singstar). It rocked and was totally a lot of fun (and Asher slept peacefully upstairs the whole night). Here's some pictures from the night!

Our nephew Jayson turned 5 this past week, and he had a fun skating party (he's into speed skating, just like his dad and uncles were). Your truly has a 3 year old niece that can skate better than her, so I decided to just stand on the side-line and take pictures.

There, now that the mandatory updates are finished, we'll get back to our regularly scheduled program! :)

The crazy happenings in the Lawson household as of late...

I enjoyed writing my bullet form blog a few months ago, and lately my friend has been doing the same on her blog, and I've been liking it a lot.

So here's my newest version: the crazy happenings in the Lawson household as of late...

* I took care of not one, not two, but three 1-year olds for the better part of a day last week. It was BUSY, and CRAZY, but we all survived and no one got hurt. (score!)

* My dear husband decided to run 8K with me on the weekend. We had no baby (he was off at the grandparents) and Greg has been saying forever that "it can't be that hard". He finally took me up on the challenge and he survived! I can't believe he ran 8K, after not having ran seriously for decades. He was, however, a hurting unit and to this day is still complaining about his thighs burning. I think my moment of joy was when he looked at me and said "this is friggin' hard" and "I can't believe you're so comfortable on this run". Yessssss!

* Greg and I spent a part of our date night in Chapters on the weekend, and I had the time of my life. (I love books!) Greg, on the other hand, spent most of his time throwing a stuffed sheep at me and making annoying noises. Just when I thought I had a night without a baby...

* Asher has "graduated" from physiotherapy! He is doing so well, and has grown so much in such a short time, that the physiotherapist doesn't feel a need to see him anymore. So proud of my boy.

* The "zoo friends" and I continue to look like fools when we make our monkey noises every week at the gibbon's cage. It pretty much never fails though that we get Molly and Hoot to "sing" for us. I love the zoo!

* I got on one of my card rants last week and bought 8 Hallmark cards at once. If you receive a card from me in the near future, it is because I love you.

* Wednesday I start hill training as a part of my 10K clinic at The Running Room. I have to run up and down 3 hills consecutively, and then gradually build up to 6 hills over the next 4 weeks. I'm scared. (And I better have buns of steel after this is all said and done!)

* My husband has a surprise for me planned for Wednesday night and I can't wait!

an update in photos

I just took a bunch of photos off of my camera (which feels like the never-ending task, by the way). Here's what you'd see we've been up to the past week or so, by the pictures we took.
We've gotten into this really nice routine of going outside as a family after supper to play together, or hang with our neighbors. Asher has been loving the slide these days, and one day last week he even got to play on one of the neighbors kid's ride-on toys.

Things with Marek around are actually going pretty great. We're still working out some kinks with nap time, but he and Asher are really enjoying each others company. Last week we did an errand to the grocery store since we got rained out from our zoo trip! We also did a trip to the local library, had snack in the library building, and tired the boys out enough with all of that to have them both pass out in the car!

And finally, we went to an outdoor wedding this past weekend for one of Greg's co-workers, and Greg snapped some pictures of Asher and I playing. I feel like I'm the one always taking the pictures, so it was nice to have some of Asher and I for a change!

A little of this, a little of that

A few random updates from the past 2 weeks...

Asher, Greg and I went to visit a local (-ish) Buffalo Safari. I think Asher enjoyed the tractor pull the most. The buffalo were pretty cool. And pretty huge. And pretty stinky (especially in the sweltering 35 degree Celsius heat). Greg pointed out that every question I asked the guide had to do with baby buffalo, or the makings of a baby buffalo. (I don't know what he's talking about). But then I was like "Hellllll-o! Babies are my life right now." Obviously.

We saw some pretty cool things; baby buffalo nursing their mama's and 3-week old babies that were all soft and fuzzy. And we also saw some pretty gross things; like a boy buffalo putting his face in a girl buffalo's pee mid-stream as she was peeing. Sick. Apparently this has something to do with it being mating season.

Here's some photos of the day (don't worry, the buffalo porn has been edited out):

***********************************************************************************

Asher also has been practicing his walking. A lot. He actually is walking most of the time, I'd say. He is getting quite good at it too, but has had a few falls and bumps, which led to a few of these along the way.

Ouch.

************************************************************************************

Asher enjoyed his first trip to a local splash park. There's a new one, within walking distance from my mom's place. Score.

He was pretty tired out after all that excitement and passed out in the middle of the living room.

Rest assured, there will be more splash park visits coming up!

************************************************************************************

We also had a scary incident with Asher a couple weeks ago as well. Since Asher was very little, he has held his breath when he cries. It usually freaks most people out because he holds it for quite some time, but we've just gotten so used to it that we don't even think about it anymore. We have certainly done our research and talked to our doctor about his breath-holding spells but nothing has ever come of it. Until a couple weeks ago. Asher held his breath during a cry for so long that he turned blue and passed out. It was the scariest feeling in the whole world... holding your blue, unconscious baby. Thankfully it only lasted for about 5-10 seconds, and he was totally fine after he regained consciousness. Don't worry, it's OK that this happened, and there's no damage or anything like that. Asher fainting was just his body's way of making sure he got oxygen again. There haven't been any more incidents since this first one, but I have a feeling more may be on there way, especially now that the boy is starting to have temper tantrums. (Oh joy).

************************************************************************************
We've also been spending some time with this guy lately.

That's Marek, and he'll be spending 2-days a week with us starting in September. I think it'll be great for Asher to have another little guy around to play with regularly. Marek is very cute, and very fun and, well, so far, so good!

************************************************************************************

And remember this friend from our beach vacation post?

That's my dear friend Erin, and she has just left the country for 2 years to go pursue her Master's Degree in Professional Counselling. We've been busy enjoying her company before she left (that's what she said, right Erin?). Our family will miss her lots, that's for sure. Good luck, Erin, and we can't wait to see you when you come home at Christmas!

I think that's all the random updates for now. Thanks for checking in!
